Worried about someone?

Asking someone directly about suicide does not put the idea in their head. It can open the door to help.

Warning signs

  • Talking about wanting to die, feeling hopeless or being a burden
  • Withdrawing from friends, family and activities
  • Giving away possessions or saying goodbye
  • Sudden changes in mood or behaviour
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs

What you can do

  1. Ask. Ask them directly and calmly if they are thinking about suicide.
  2. Listen. Listen without judging, arguing or preaching.
  3. Stay. Do not leave someone at immediate risk alone.
  4. Connect. Help them call the toll-free line 0800 678 678 or reach a health professional.
  5. Follow up. Check in with them in the days that follow.

People in suicidal crises need empathy and practical assistance, not condemnation.
