Charity Sylvia Akotia, PhD., is a Professor of Social and Community Psychology at the Department of Psychology, University of Ghana, Legon. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree from the University of Ghana, a Master of Arts in Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU), Ontario, Canada, and a PhD from the University of Ghana. She is a former Dean of the School of Social Sciences, at the University of Ghana. Her primary research areas include suicide and suicide prevention in a cultural context, gender, aging, and more recently, personhood and identity formation. As a community psychologist, she works with vulnerable and marginalized groups to promote social justice and social change in their communities. She has worked extensively on research projects with collaborators from Norway, Uganda, Germany, and the USA and has published widely in several local and international peer-reviewed journals. She has also presented papers at conferences worldwide, including keynote addresses. She is currently the National Representative for the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in Ghana and a Co-chair of the Council of National Representatives, IASP.
